IIT Kanpur, NMDC Partner for Mining Sector Cybersecurity & AI

The Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur) and NMDC Limited have formed a partnership to advance cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and digital transformation within India’s mining sector.

The collaboration aims to enhance operational efficiency and strengthen digital infrastructure across NMDC’s operations. This initiative focuses on integrating advanced technologies to safeguard systems and modernize mining practices.

Cybersecurity and System Protection

Under this agreement, IIT Kanpur’s C3iHub will provide specialized support for NMDC’s Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT) ecosystems. This support includes a range of services designed to bolster cyber resilience.

C3iHub will conduct comprehensive cyber risk assessments to identify potential vulnerabilities within NMDC’s digital networks and control systems. Following these assessments, detailed vulnerability analyses will pinpoint specific weaknesses that could be exploited by cyber threats.

The partnership also covers security governance , establishing robust policies and frameworks for managing digital security across NMDC. Additionally, C3iHub will assist in developing incident response plans , preparing NMDC to effectively manage and mitigate cyberattacks should they occur.

To ensure best practices are met, the collaboration includes benchmarking of Security Operations Centre (SOC) models . This process evaluates NMDC’s existing security operations against industry standards, recommending improvements for continuous protection.

Advancing Digital Transformation

Beyond cybersecurity, the partnership targets significant digital transformation within NMDC’s mining ecosystem. This includes the implementation of advanced AI and ML-driven solutions to optimize various operations.

Key technologies to be deployed include digital twins , virtual replicas of physical assets or systems that allow for real-time monitoring and simulation. These twins help predict performance and identify issues without impacting live operations.

Predictive maintenance frameworks will also be developed. These systems use AI and ML to analyze data from machinery, forecasting equipment failures before they happen. This approach reduces downtime and extends the lifespan of critical mining equipment.

The collaboration will also leverage advanced data analytics to extract valuable insights from vast amounts of operational data. These insights will inform decision-making, improving efficiency and resource management across NMDC’s mines.

Research and Capacity Building

IIT Kanpur and NMDC will jointly conduct research and development initiatives. These efforts aim to explore new technological solutions specific to the mining sector’s challenges.

The partnership also involves capacity-building programmes . These programs will train NMDC personnel in new technologies and cybersecurity practices, enhancing their skills in AI, ML, and digital security. This ensures the workforce is prepared to utilize advanced systems effectively.

Technology pilots will be carried out to test new applications in real-world scenarios. Successful proofs-of-concept from these pilots will be evaluated for broader, scalable deployment across NMDC’s operations, ensuring practical and impactful implementation.

Leadership Statements

Manindra Agrawal, Director of IIT Kanpur, stated the institution possesses strong research expertise in cybersecurity and AI. He noted these efforts address challenges of national interest. Agrawal expressed confidence the collaboration will strengthen cyber resilience at NMDC and foster development of transformative technologies in AI, ML, and smart industrial systems for mining.

Agreement Details

The agreement was signed by Satyendra Rai, Executive Director (Digital Transformation) at NMDC Limited. The Dean of Research & Development at IIT Kanpur also signed the document. Manindra Agrawal and other officials from NMDC and I-Hub NTIHAC Foundation (C3iHub) were present during the signing.

This collaboration represents a step towards strengthening cyber resilience and accelerating digital transformation in India’s vital mining sector.
