UP, Assam Governors Discuss Higher Education Reforms

Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel and Assam Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya held a meeting on Monday at the Raj Bhavan in New Delhi. The discussion focused on higher education reforms and sharing academic achievements from Uttar Pradesh universities. Governor Patel detailed UP’s progress in making its universities technologically capable, transparent, public-friendly, and research-oriented, according to an official Raj Bhavan statement.

Uttar Pradesh University Performance and Rankings

Uttar Pradesh universities have demonstrated strong performance in various national and international assessments. Governor Patel specifically highlighted outcomes from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) evaluation. NAAC is a key body that assesses and accredits higher education institutions in India based on quality parameters.

  • Nine universities in Uttar Pradesh secured an “A+Plus” grade. This top accreditation signifies the highest standards of quality and excellence.
  • Three universities earned an “A+” grade. This reflects strong performance across key academic and administrative areas.
  • Five universities received an “A” grade. This indicates good overall quality in their operations.
  • Two universities secured a “B+Plus” grade.

Beyond NAAC accreditation, Uttar Pradesh institutions also performed well in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF). Fourteen universities achieved favorable positions across 11 different categories in the NIRF rankings, which is India’s national system for ranking higher education institutions. Furthermore, several UP universities demonstrated strong results in global evaluations, including the QS South Asia and QS Asia rankings. These international rankings provide a broader perspective on university standing.

Funding and University Category Status

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has granted Category 1 status to six state universities in Uttar Pradesh. This designation provides these institutions with greater academic and administrative autonomy. Substantial financial support has also been allocated to boost research and develop critical infrastructure within the state’s higher education sector.

  • Under the PM Usha (Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan) program, six universities each received Rs 100 crore . This scheme aims to enhance overall quality, access, and equity in state higher education institutions.
  • Eight other universities received Rs 20 crore each. This funding is specifically earmarked for crucial research projects and essential infrastructure development, supporting academic growth.

Assam’s Higher Education Initiatives

The meeting also featured a detailed presentation from officials of the Assam Governor’s Secretariat. They outlined current initiatives and ongoing innovations within Assam’s higher education system. This exchange provided valuable insights into different state approaches to educational reform and progress.
