Two first-year nursing students died Sunday after a Vande Bharat Express train struck them near Bengaluru. The incident occurred close to Chikkabanavara railway station . Police identified the deceased as Sterlin Eliza Shaji , 19, and Justin Joseph , 20. Both students were natives of Kerala. They pursued BSc Nursing at a private institution in the city.
The accident happened around 2:35 PM. Police reports indicate the students were crossing railway tracks. They were reportedly walking towards their paying guest accommodation nearby. The Belagavi-bound Vande Bharat train, operating from Bengaluru, hit them directly. Both individuals died instantly at the scene.
Investigation Underway
Railway police found the bodies severely dismembered on the tracks. Authorities registered an Unnatural Death Report (UDR) at the Bengaluru Rural Railway Police Station. This report initiates a formal investigation into the circumstances of death. A senior railway police officer confirmed an ongoing inquiry. Officers are examining CCTV footage from the area. This review aims to determine if the deaths were accidental or a case of suicide.
The Vande Bharat Express
The Vande Bharat Express represents India’s first semi-high-speed train service. These trains can reach speeds up to 160 kilometers per hour. They are known for their rapid acceleration and advanced safety features. The Bengaluru-Belagavi route is one of several operational Vande Bharat corridors. The train involved in the incident was en route to Belagavi from Bengaluru city. High-speed trains provide very little reaction time for individuals on tracks. Their quiet operation at speed also makes them less audible until very close.
Railway Track Dangers
Crossing railway tracks outside designated points poses significant risks. Railway lines are active zones, not pedestrian pathways. Many accidents occur due to individuals taking shortcuts across tracks. Distraction, including using mobile phones or wearing headphones, also contributes to incidents. Indian Railways frequently issues advisories on track safety. These warnings urge people to use foot overbridges or designated level crossings only. Walking on or near tracks is illegal and extremely dangerous. The powerful suction and pressure created by passing high-speed trains can also be hazardous.
Legal and Safety Perspectives
An Unnatural Death Report covers deaths not caused by natural circumstances. It ensures police investigate all potential factors. This includes examining the scene, collecting evidence, and interviewing witnesses. Post-mortem examinations will provide further details on the cause of death. The railway police prioritize public safety. They continuously work to educate communities about track hazards. Students and young adults living near railway lines must exercise extreme caution. Adhering to railway safety rules protects lives and prevents tragic incidents.
Preventative Measures and Awareness
Authorities regularly conduct awareness campaigns regarding railway safety. These campaigns target populations residing near railway infrastructure. They highlight the dangers of trespassing on tracks. The campaigns emphasize using designated crossings and avoiding shortcuts. Railway property is private, and unauthorized entry is prohibited. Accidents involving trains are often severe due to the trains’ weight, speed, and inability to stop quickly. Such incidents underscore the critical need for constant vigilance around railway environments. Community cooperation remains essential for preventing future tragedies.
