IIT Bombay Launches Student Wellness Initiatives, Conclave Set

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has implemented new student wellness programs to reduce academic stress. Initiatives include soothing kits, sound bath sessions, pet therapy, and mandatory wellness workshops. The institute will also host a two-day National Wellbeing Conclave 2025 from November 22-23 .

An official stated these programs aim to support students, particularly during exam periods. The initiatives address stress experienced by 30-40% of students, identified through internal surveys. Factors contributing to stress include academic pressure, adjustment issues, family problems, and relationship concerns.

Mandatory Wellness Workshops and Mentorship

IIT Bombay introduced mandatory wellness workshops into its curriculum. All students must complete four workshops each semester. These sessions will dedicate eight hours of the students’ 40-hour extra-curricular activity requirement.

The institute has hired full-time staff and life coaches with engineering backgrounds and wellness training to lead these workshops. Temporary staff also support the program. Students can attend missed sessions at alternative times.

A comprehensive mentorship program supports students. Third and fourth-year students serve as mentors for freshers. The institute also enlists alumni to guide students through academic life. There are a total of 895 mentors across all student levels.

Curriculum and Assessment Reforms

IIT Bombay is revising its teaching methods and assessment framework. The goal is to create a more student-centric learning environment. This shift moves from a traditional teaching model to a learning-focused approach. It also redefines assessment to focus on capacity realization.

The institute draws inspiration from international universities for its curriculum review. These changes aim to lessen academic pressure on students, contributing to overall wellbeing.

Exam Period Support

During examinations, IIT Bombay provides specific resources to help students manage stress. Soothing kits are available, containing items like chocolate, bells, affirmation cards, and textured objects. These items engage different senses to promote calmness.

Students also have access to stress balls and calming pictures. These tools offer immediate stress relief options during high-pressure times.

National Wellbeing Conclave 2025

IIT Bombay will host the National Wellbeing Conclave 2025 on November 22-23 . The Department of Higher Education is collaborating on this two-day event. The conclave will bring together 79 higher education institutions .

Participating institutions include 20 IITs , six Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) , and eight Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) . The event expects 141 faculty members and 130 students to attend.

The conclave agenda includes student workshops, faculty workshops, symposia, and panel discussions. These activities aim to share best practices in student wellbeing across India’s higher education sector.
