The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to issue a strong public statement. This call comes after reports of widespread harassment targeting Kashmiri students in northern states. The harassment intensified hours after a blast near Delhi’s Red Fort.
JKSA National Convenor Nasir Khuehami stated that Kashmiri students face “collective suspicion” following the incident. He described this suspicion as “unjust and dangerous.” Khuehami made these remarks at a press conference held at the Press Club of India.
Harassment of Kashmiri Students
Khuehami reported that Kashmiri students are experiencing profiling, eviction, and intimidation. These incidents occur in universities and residential areas across several states. Affected regions include Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Delhi.
Many students have been forced to vacate their rooms. Some have returned home due to fear. Khuehami noted that while the official response to the Delhi blast has been measured, public reaction, especially online, has been troubling.
JKSA’s Appeal to Prime Minister Modi
A strong statement from the Prime Minister is crucial, according to Khuehami. He emphasized the need to acknowledge the anxieties of Kashmiri students. JKSA specifically requested that Prime Minister Modi urge citizens not to circulate unverified rumors.
The association also called for Modi to reaffirm constitutional protections for all citizens. Khuehami believes this action will help curb irresponsible statements and prevent the spread of hate. He highlighted Modi’s immense mass appeal and influence across India, stating his words can unite minds and heal divisions.
JKSA further urged the Government to coordinate with universities, employers, and local administrations. This coordination aims to ensure the safety and well-being of Kashmiris nationwide. The association demanded strict action against anyone attempting to create communal discord or instigate hostility.
Kashmiris Condemn Terror
JKSA condemned the terror attack at Delhi’s Red Fort area. The association expressed deep sorrow over the loss of innocent lives. Khuehami stated that perpetrators of such acts are not friends of Kashmir or any religious community.
“Terror has no religion, no region, and no identity,” JKSA affirmed in a statement. The association clarified that those who believe terror actions gain legitimacy in Kashmir are deeply mistaken. Kashmiris desire peace, dignity, and harmony within India and across South Asia.
Contributions to the Nation
Khuehami highlighted the contributions and sacrifices made by Kashmiri families for the nation. He stressed that students from Jammu and Kashmir have consistently rejected separatism, secessionism, radicalization, and ideologies that seek to divide India.
“Our people have stood on the borders, protected the country with courage, and given their blood for India’s sovereignty,” Khuehami said. He assured that the students association is willing to cooperate with authorities to ensure perpetrators are brought to justice.
A clear message and public reassurance from the Prime Minister can pave the way for a more inclusive and harmonious India, Kashmiri students stated. Such a message can dispel misconceptions, reduce prejudice, and restore trust at the grassroots level.
