Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced Wednesday the Delhi government will develop sports grounds and multipurpose auditoriums in schools. The initiative aims to promote sports among children from an early age, fostering their physical and mental development.
Gupta reviewed departmental activities. She directed officials to prepare a detailed blueprint for the plan. The blueprint will outline specific steps for identifying suitable locations, designing state-of-the-art facilities, and integrating sports academies into the school system.
Building a Comprehensive Sports Ecosystem
The initiative seeks to build a strong sports ecosystem within Delhi’s educational institutions. This involves extensive collaboration with reputed sports academies. Professional coaching will be provided across a range of popular disciplines. These include cricket , boxing , taekwondo , football , and swimming , among others.
Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) will be signed with these academies. These formal agreements will establish structured training programs directly within school premises. Chief Minister Gupta emphasized that the primary goal is to ensure children receive quality sports training from an early age. This focused training aims to help students pursue their athletic ambitions with discipline and confidence.
Beyond skill development, sports also promote broader life skills. These include enhanced physical fitness, teamwork, perseverance, and leadership abilities. The government views these skills as essential for the holistic development of students.
Facility Development and Equal Opportunity
The education department currently oversees 799 school buildings and campuses throughout Delhi. Officials have been tasked to identify suitable locations for developing new sports grounds or multipurpose auditoriums. This assessment will consider existing infrastructure and available space.
Schools with larger open spaces will receive modern, dedicated sports facilities. Conversely, those with limited land will get multi-purpose auditoriums or mini sports arenas. This adaptable approach ensures that all schools, regardless of their footprint, benefit from improved sports infrastructure.
A key focus of the plan is ensuring equal opportunities. Rural schools will be prioritized for development. This ensures young athletes in underserved areas across Delhi gain access to quality training facilities.
The government is also examining the feasibility of constructing swimming pools in select schools. These new aquatic facilities would offer foundational training in all major water sports, further expanding athletic opportunities.
Funding and Government Support for Athletes
Chief Minister Gupta confirmed there will be no shortage of funds allocated for this ambitious project. She added that the plan is a high-priority initiative and will be implemented expeditiously. She reiterated that promoting sports remains one of her government’s top priorities for the state.
Existing Athlete Incentive Schemes
Delhi currently operates robust incentive schemes to support high-achieving athletes. The Delhi Government awards significant financial prizes for Olympic success:
- Olympic Gold Medallists: Rs 7 crore
- Olympic Silver Medallists: Rs 5 crore
- Olympic Bronze Medallists: Rs 3 crore
Beyond Olympic achievements, promising sportspersons at national and state levels also qualify for financial support and government jobs. This comprehensive support system aims to encourage athletic excellence and provide career pathways for talented individuals.
Fostering a Vibrant Sports Culture
The project extends beyond merely building infrastructure. Its broader aim is to nurture a vibrant sports culture throughout Delhi. The ultimate objective is to provide every child with the opportunity to engage in sports. Through participation, they can gain confidence, learn teamwork, and develop leadership qualities essential for their future success.
