Mumbai Youth Congress Demands SIT Probe for Doctor’s Suicide

The Mumbai Youth Congress staged a significant protest on Monday. They demanded a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into the suicide of a young woman doctor. The 28-year-old doctor was found dead in Phaltan. Police intercepted and detained over 200 protestors across Mumbai.

Protest Action and Leadership

The demonstrations saw Youth Congress workers and leaders gather in various parts of the city. Their primary target was Varsha, the official residence of the Chief Minister. However, police forces moved to stop the procession well before reaching the high-security location. All participants were subsequently detained by authorities.

Prominent figures led the protest charge. These included Zeenat Shabrin, the chief of Mumbai Youth Congress. Uday Bhanu Chib, the National President of Youth Congress, also joined the demonstration. State party spokesperson Sachin Sawant was another key leader present. Following their detention, all individuals were transported to the Azad Maidan police station for processing.

According to a party statement, protests spanned three strategic locations. These included the financial hub of Nariman Point, the iconic Marine Drive, and the vicinity outside Varsha. Police ensured robust deployment in sensitive areas. Malabar Hill and Girgaon saw heightened security. This measure aimed to prevent any potential disruptions or untoward incidents during the widespread protests.

Details of the Tragic Suicide

The deceased, a 28-year-old doctor, originated from Beed district. She was serving as a medical professional at a government hospital in Satara district. The tragic incident occurred on October 23 . Her body was discovered hanging inside a hotel room situated in Phaltan town. This discovery initiated a police investigation into the circumstances.

A critical piece of evidence emerged from the scene: a suicide note. This note was reportedly written on her palm. It contained grave allegations against two individuals. Police Sub-Inspector Gopal Badane was accused of multiple instances of rape. Software engineer Prashant Bankar was alleged to have subjected her to mental harassment. These accusations provided immediate leads for investigators.

Both named individuals, Gopal Badane and Prashant Bankar, faced immediate arrest. They were taken into custody based on the allegations in the suicide note. The police acted swiftly following the serious nature of the claims. Subsequently, Police Sub-Inspector Badane was officially sacked from the police force. This termination underscores the severity of the allegations against a public servant.

Demand for a Special Investigation Team

The central demand from the Mumbai Youth Congress remains constant: a thorough probe by a Special Investigation Team. An SIT is an independent body formed to investigate specific, often complex, cases. Spokesperson Sachin Sawant emphasized the necessity of this independent inquiry. He affirmed the party’s unwavering resolve to pursue the matter.

Sawant stated that the Youth Congress will continue its fight. This commitment is directed towards securing justice for the deceased doctor and her family. They believe an SIT is essential to ensure impartiality and uncover the full truth behind the tragic incident. The party views the SIT as the only way to guarantee a fair investigation and accountability.
