About This Scholarship

EMBO is offering Long Term Fellowships for PhD degree holders, supporting post-doctoral research visits to laboratories across Europe and worldwide. These fellowships are awarded for a period of up to two years.

Selected fellows receive a comprehensive package of benefits designed to support their research and personal well-being:
• A stipend to cover the cost of living in the host country.
Dependent child allowance for dependent children under the age of 18, with the value varying by country.
Childcare allowance of up to EUR 2,500 per child per year.
Travel allowance of up to EUR 5,000 to cover travel costs.
• Opportunities for parental leave and part-time work.
• Access to EMBO fellow meetings and laboratory leadership courses.
• Eligibility for private pension schemes.

It is important to note that there is no specific application deadline for EMBO Long-Term Fellowships. Applications are evaluated in two main cycles per year.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the EMBO Long Term Fellowships, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

• Hold a doctorate degree or equivalent at the start of the fellowship.
• Have at least one first author publication accepted in or published in an international peer-reviewed journal at the time of application.
• Involve movement between countries during the PhD.

Important Notes for Applicants:

• Candidates who already hold a PhD degree at the time of application can apply only if they have obtained their PhD degree during two years prior to the date of application.
• Candidates who have already started working in the host laboratory can apply if they have been working for less than six months in the host laboratory at the time of application.

Selection Criteria and Process:

• Eligible applications are first sent to the fellowship committee for pre-screening. Twice the number of available fellowships will be selected for an interview.
• During the pre-screening phase, the committee reviews a condensed application form.
• Applicants who successfully pass the pre-screening stage must appear for a personal or video interview. An interviewer, who is an expert in the area of the application, will be selected from among the EMBO Members and EMBO Young Investigators.
Note: In cases where a personal or video interview is not possible, the candidate's application is sent for a written evaluation.
• The Fellowship Committee then convenes to make the final funding decisions.
• Results are typically announced within 14-16 weeks after the evaluation deadline.

Required Documents

Applicants are required to submit the following documents:

Two reference letters from individuals who can attest to your scientific abilities and potential.
• An acceptance letter from the receiving institute, confirming their willingness to host your research.

How to Apply

To apply for the EMBO Long Term Fellowships, please follow these steps:

1. Step 1: Visit the official website registration link to register and create a login account. This is the first step to begin your new application.
2. Step 2: Log in to your newly created account. Here, you will be required to input detailed information related to your personal details, referee details, proposed work, present work, and specifics about your PhD and postdoctoral work.
3. Step 3: Upload all necessary supporting documents, including your scientific CV and any relevant grant information.
4. Step 4: Carefully review all the information provided and then submit your application form.

Important Application Timelines:

• Any complete applications received by the second Friday of February, 2 pm CET, will be evaluated in their spring meeting, with interviews conducted in April.
• Applications received by the second Friday of August, 2 pm CEST, will be evaluated in their autumn meeting, with interviews in October.
