Panjab University Withdraws No-Protest Affidavit After Student Agitation

CHANDIGARH – Panjab University (PU) has withdrawn its controversial “no-protest affidavit” requirement for students. The decision, made on Tuesday evening , followed a seven-day agitation by students.

Student leaders immediately called off their protests across the campus. Panjab University Campus Students’ Council General Secretary Abhishek Dagar also ended his seven-day hunger strike , stating, “It is a victory of every student of PU.”

Policy Reversal Details

The university confirmed the policy reversal in an official statement. It specified the withdrawal of the “affidavit/undertaking requirement for students enrolled in first year courses or programs for the 2025-2026 session .” This move brought an end to the student unrest.

PU authorities explained the decision aims to serve the “larger interest of students.” It also seeks “to ensure that academic activities continue smoothly on the campus.” As part of the resolution, agitating students agreed to withdraw their legal case related to the issue.

The Controversial Affidavit

Students launched an indefinite strike last week demanding the affidavit’s withdrawal. Protesters claimed the document forced students to declare they would not participate in campus protests or demonstrations. They termed this requirement “undemocratic,” arguing it restricted their fundamental right to express dissent.

The affidavit was designed to compel students to commit to refraining from any form of protest or demonstration on university grounds. Students viewed this as a direct infringement on their freedom of speech and assembly, sparking widespread opposition.

University’s Stance

The university’s statement reaffirmed its commitment to a “constructive academic environment.” It also highlighted its continued encouragement of “open dialogue” and respect for “diverse views and opinions.”

This commitment aims to foster a campus where students can engage in academic pursuits without fear of reprisal for expressing their opinions within established guidelines. The withdrawal signals a move towards rebuilding trust between the administration and the student body.

Background of the Agitation

The protest escalated over the past week, drawing significant student participation. Abhishek Dagar’s hunger strike underscored the seriousness of the students’ demands. The students’ council mobilized support, making the affidavit a central point of contention in campus politics.

The students’ demand for the affidavit’s complete removal garnered momentum, leading to the university administration’s review of the policy. The ongoing pressure ultimately led to Tuesday’s resolution, ensuring peace on campus.
