IIT Delhi Leads India in QS Asia University Rankings 2026

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi secured the top position among Indian institutions. This was announced in the QS Asia University Rankings 2026. India saw 294 institutions featured in this year’s rankings. Seven Indian universities achieved spots within the top 100. Twenty institutions placed in the top 200. Sixty-six Indian universities ranked within Asia’s top 500.

Indian University Performance Overview

Thirty-six Indian universities improved their ranks. Sixteen institutions held their positions from the previous year. One hundred five universities experienced a drop in their QS Asia Rankings. The rankings indicate varying performance across the Indian higher education sector.

Key Performance Indicators

India demonstrated strong performance in specific indicators. The country scored highest in ‘Papers per Faculty.’ India also achieved high scores in ‘Staff with PhD.’ These indicators reflect research productivity and faculty expertise.

Five Indian universities featured among Asia’s top 10 for research productivity. Twenty-eight Indian institutions placed in Asia’s top 50 for this indicator. For ‘Staff with PhD,’ 45 Indian institutions ranked within Asia’s top 100.

Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology, West Bengal, led Asia in ‘Papers per Faculty.’ Bharathiar University followed its ranking. The Indian Institute of Science, Anna University, and Indian Institute of Technology Madras also ranked highly in this category.

National Institute of Technology (NIT) Nagaland and Mother Teresa Women’s University shared second place in India for ‘Staff with PhD.’ Nine institutions secured joint fourth position nationally. These included the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Patna, IIT Ropar, IISER Bhopal, and the Indian Institute of Information Technology Design and Manufacturing (IIITDM).

Significant Rank Changes and New Entrants

The QS Asia Rankings 2026 recorded 137 new university entrants. This number represents the highest debutant count ever. Chandigarh University climbed to 109th place. This marks an improvement from its 120th rank last year.

Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) Pilani moved to 154th this year. BITS Pilani improved 40 places over a five-year period. OP Jindal Global University entered the top 200 for the first time. It secured the 163rd position. Lovely Professional University also improved its standing, ranking at 187th.
