Telangana Reserves 85% PG Medical Seats for Locals

Telangana reserved 85% of postgraduate medical and dental management quota seats for local students in private colleges. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy approved the policy after a request from Health Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha. The decision aims to increase the number of specialist doctors within the state.

The new policy makes approximately 318 PG medical and 70 dental seats available to Telangana students. Chief Minister Reddy directed the Health Secretary to issue a Government Order (GO) immediately to implement the changes.

Seat Allocation Changes

Previously, all management quota (MQ) seats in Telangana’s private medical colleges were filled under the All India Quota (AIQ) category. Students from across India secured these positions. With the new rules, 85% of these MQ seats will now go exclusively to students from Telangana.

Health Minister Rajanarsimha explained the revised allocation. “The government will allocate 85% of seats in the management quota and 100% of seats in the convenor quota exclusively to students from our state,” he stated. This marks a significant shift from the previous system, where local students competed for MQ seats with candidates nationwide.

Benefits for Local Students

The Health Minister highlighted benefits for thousands of MBBS graduates in Telangana. He noted the intense competition for postgraduate medical seats. These seats are fewer in number compared to MBBS admissions. Rajanarsimha said the reservation addresses this challenge. It provides more opportunities for local students to pursue specialized medical education.

“The number of specialist doctors in the state is set to increase,” Rajanarsimha posted on X. He added the state government is taking steps to provide better medical services to the public. The changes respond to requests from the medical community.
