Underutilized Engineering Seats
Sixty-six engineering institutes across Maharashtra reported admission percentages below 50%. These institutes collectively had an intake capacity of 19,674 seats . Only 5,879 admissions were filled, leading to a low overall admission rate of 29.88% for this group of institutions.
The official MAH CET engineering admission report indicates that these institutes collectively struggle to attract students. Some facilities reported extremely low admissions, specifically below 10%. The report points to sustainability challenges for these institutions due to limited demand or preference among candidates.
Regional Admission Trends
Pune emerged as the top choice for BE and BTech candidates, demonstrating the highest student retention rate within its region. Out of 44,748 candidates from Pune, 43,270 (96.7%) secured admission within the city itself. Only 1,478 candidates (3.3%) opted for admission outside Pune, with 898 of them moving to Mumbai for their studies.
In contrast, the Amaravati region recorded a significantly lower student retention rate. Of 16,651 candidates from Amaravati, only 7,960 (47.8%) remained in the region for their admissions. A total of 8,691 candidates (52.2%) migrated to other regions to pursue their engineering courses.
For the upcoming academic year 2026, the Maharashtra CET Cell plans to integrate scholarship approvals with CAP counselling. This integration aims to streamline the process for students, enabling scholarship approval at the time of admission and eliminating the need for annual renewals through the MahaDBT portal.
