JEE Main 2026: CBSE & NTA Prevent Exam Clashes

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has directed all schools to provide Class 11 registration numbers to the National Testing Agency (NTA). This measure aims to prevent date conflicts between the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main 2026 and CBSE Class 12 Board examinations.

The CBSE released its final Class 10 and 12 board exam date sheets for 2026 on October 30. Class 12 exams will take place from February 17 to April 9, 2026 . Written exams are scheduled from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM, with some papers ending at 12:30 PM.

Avoiding Exam Date Clashes

The NTA recently announced the JEE Main 2026 exam dates. Session 1 is set for January 21 to 30, 2026 . Session 2 will occur between April 1 and 10, 2026 . The CBSE Class 12 exams conclude on April 9, one day before the final JEE Main Session 2 date.

Previous years have seen frequent clashes and overlaps between CBSE board exams and JEE Main dates. These scheduling conflicts have caused inconvenience and pressure for students, impacting their performance in both critical examinations.

How Class 11 Data Helps

To prevent future conflicts, the NTA will require students to enter their Class 11 registration number when applying for JEE Main. The CBSE issues a unique registration number to students enrolling in Class 11, which remains constant through their senior secondary education. This unique identifier will enable the NTA to schedule JEE Main exam dates to avoid overlaps with individual students’ CBSE Class 12 exams.

The CBSE stated it prepared the 2026 date sheet with sufficient gaps between subjects. It also considered dates of entrance examinations for Class 12 students. The board aims to complete exams well before major entrance tests, allowing students better time management.

Importance of Both Examinations

JEE Main is conducted by the NTA to determine eligibility for BE and BTech courses. This examination is a qualifying test for JEE Advanced, which serves as the gateway for admission to Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Approximately 1.3 million students apply for JEE Main each year.

Success in both board exams and entrance tests is crucial for engineering aspirants. Qualifying among the top 20 percentile of students in their respective boards can also increase a student’s chances for IIT admission.

Instructions for Schools and Students

CBSE-affiliated schools previously submitted error-free data in the List of Candidates (LOC) for Class 10 and 12 board exams. The board confirmed it now possesses final data on student subject combinations. Schools must now ensure they provide Class 11 registration numbers to students applying for JEE Main.

Students intending to appear for JEE Main 2026 should obtain their Class 11 registration number from their schools. This number is essential for their JEE Main application and for preventing future exam date clashes.
