Allahabad University has suspended 16 students and expelled them from their hostel. The university took this decisive action following an alleged ragging incident. The reported harassment occurred at the Sir Sunderlal Hostel. This move underscores the university’s zero-tolerance policy towards such behavior. Authorities acted swiftly after receiving a formal complaint from other students, prompting a thorough investigation into the matter.
Investigation Initiated by Proctor
University proctor Rakesh Singh initiated an immediate inquiry into the ragging complaint. He directed an anti-ragging squad to conduct a surprise inspection. The squad visited the Sir Sunderlal Hostel on October 9 to gather evidence. During this unannounced inspection, several students were identified as being “prima facie” involved in the reported ragging activities, leading to the identification of potential culprits.
Disciplinary Committee Recommendations
A dedicated disciplinary committee was subsequently formed to probe the incident further. This committee meticulously investigated all aspects of the complaint. After a comprehensive review of the evidence and witness accounts, the committee finalized its findings. It then formally recommended stringent disciplinary measures, specifically targeting the 16 students who were found to have played a role in the harassment.
University Implements Sanctions
Acting promptly on the disciplinary committee’s robust recommendations, Allahabad University enforced immediate sanctions. The 16 implicated students received notification of their suspension from academic activities. Concurrently, they were ordered to vacate their rooms, effectively being expelled from the university hostel. Additionally, each suspended student was issued a formal show-cause notice, demanding a written explanation for their involvement and actions during the ragging incident.
Mandatory Hearing on October 30
The university’s proctor has scheduled a mandatory appearance for all suspended students. They must report before an inquiry committee on October 30 . This hearing requires students to attend accompanied by their parents or legal guardians. Attendees must present valid identification for verification purposes. During this session, students are expected to submit their detailed written explanations regarding the allegations against them.
Second Ragging Incident at Ambedkar Hostel
In a separate and distinct development, another serious ragging incident has been reported within Allahabad University. This second case occurred at the Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Hostel. The victim is identified as Vishwajeet, a first-year Bachelor of Arts (BA) student. He is a resident of room number 117 at the Chandpur Salori-based hostel, raising concerns about safety across campus.
Brutal Details and Prior Negligence
Vishwajeet, who originates from Charwa in Kaushambi district, faced severe and inhumane treatment. According to reports, senior students forcibly dragged him to the hostel rooftop. There, they compelled him to stand in an agonizing ‘rooster’ position. Following this, the seniors subjected him to a physical beating. Significantly, Vishwajeet had reportedly filed a complaint about ragging on a previous occasion, but no corrective or preventive action was taken by authorities then.
Police Investigation Underway
The incident at Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Hostel prompted further legal action. A formal case has been registered at the Colonelganj police station. The complaint names several unidentified individuals as perpetrators of the ragging. Law enforcement agencies are currently conducting an active investigation into the matter. However, as of the latest information, police have not yet made any arrests in connection with Vishwajeet’s assault, as reported by Jagran media outlets.
