The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has announced the final results for the Combined Defence Services Examination (I), 2025 (CDS 1 2025). A total of 365 candidates have successfully qualified for officer training in the Indian Armed Forces. These results are now available on the official UPSC website,upsc.gov.in.
This final merit list was prepared by evaluating candidates’ performance across two main stages: the written examination and the rigorous Services Selection Board (SSB) interview. Three candidates achieved the top ranks: Chirag Gaur secured the first position, Arya Umesh Dharmatti ranked second, and Satya Prakash Tiwari placed third.
Understanding the Selection Process
The CDS examination is a comprehensive, multi-stage selection process. It recruits candidates for pre-commission training at the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), and Air Force Academy (AFA). The initial phase involves a written examination, followed by the SSB interview for shortlisted candidates.
Earlier stages saw a larger pool of candidates qualify from the written test. For the Indian Military Academy, 2560 candidates initially qualified. The Indian Naval Academy had 942 written qualifiers. Similarly, 636 candidates passed the written examination for the Air Force Academy.
The Services Selection Board (SSB) interview is a demanding assessment conducted by Army Headquarters. It evaluates a candidate’s personality, intelligence, and potential for leadership. This assessment uses psychological tests, group tasks, and personal interviews. The 365 candidates declared qualified successfully cleared these intensive SSB evaluations.
Medical examination results are assessed separately. These results were not factored into the preparation of the current merit lists. Qualified candidates must also meet all prescribed medical standards for final induction into the academies.
